How to get to Huaraz from Lima via Pativilca–Conococha: distance, bus travel time, overnight bus tips and alternatives from Chimbote and Casma.

Huaraz is about 400 kilometres north of Lima by road. There is no train and scheduled flights are scarce or non-existent depending on the season, so most travellers arrive overland. The good news: the route is paved and the scenery, especially the climb from the coast to the puna, is spectacular.

The main route: Lima – Pativilca – Conococha – Huaraz

  1. Lima – Pativilca: about 207 km on the Panamericana Norte along the coast.
  2. Pativilca – Conococha: about 121–122 km climbing into the highlands, up to Conococha lake above 4,000 metres, where the Santa River begins.
  3. Conococha – Huaraz: about 78–79 km gently descending the Santa valley via Recuay.

In total about 400–407 km depending on the source. SERNANP's official Huascarán National Park brochure gives 404 km and about 7 hours overland.

By bus: the most popular option

Several companies run Lima–Huaraz daily, with day and especially night departures. Sales platforms such as redBus and CheckMyBus, and companies such as Cruz del Sur, show travel times usually between about 7 and 9 hours depending on company, service and Lima traffic. Buses leave mainly from terminals in north and central Lima and arrive near central Huaraz.

Prices change with company, seat type, date and how early you buy, so we do not publish figures: compare on official company websites or sales platforms.

Day or night bus?

  • Night: saves a hotel night and a travel day, but you arrive early, tired, and miss the scenery.
  • Day: you see the climb to the mountains and Conococha lake and arrive with more energy. Worth it at least one way.

Bus tips

  • Choose formal companies with their own terminal and buy through official channels.
  • Keep a warm layer at hand: air conditioning and the Conococha altitude make the bus cold at night.
  • Drink water and eat light: the climb is fast and it is your first contact with altitude.
  • Keep valuables with you, not in the overhead rack.
  • If you get carsick on bends, choose front seats and ask your doctor or pharmacist before the trip.

By car

Driving lets you stop at Conococha or valley villages. The route is paved, but consider the climbing bends, occasional fog, heavy traffic and altitude, which also affects drivers. Avoid driving at night if you do not know the road and check conditions in the rainy season (December to March), when landslides (huaicos) can occur.

Alternative routes from the north coast

  • Casma – Huaraz: about 149 km across the Cordillera Negra. Guides describe it in poorer condition than the main route, but it lets you combine Huaraz with Casma, Chankillo and Sechín.
  • Chimbote/Santa – Cañón del Pato – Caraz – Huaraz: follows the Santa River through the impressive Cañón del Pato, with tunnels cut into rock. One of Peru's most spectacular routes, but with unpaved sections in poor condition; guides recommend it only with experienced drivers.

Before choosing one, ask about current conditions at the terminal or with local operators. More coastal ideas in what to see in Chimbote.

By plane?

Huaraz has an airfield at Anta, north of the city, but commercial flights have historically been irregular. Check directly with airlines which routes operate on your dates. Flying to over 2,700 m is exactly what the CDC recommend avoiding without preparation, so plan acclimatization days.

Arriving in Lima from abroad

If you land at Lima's international airport and want to go straight to the bus terminal, book a transfer in advance so you do not improvise at night. In the booking block below you will find airport transfer options and data eSIMs.

Arrive and acclimatize

Getting off the bus in Huaraz means sleeping above 3,000 metres after passing over 4,000 at Conococha. Take the first day easy and do not schedule Laguna 69 for the next day. Read our acclimatization guide.
