Choosing your dates well can make the difference between seeing the Cordillera Blanca reflected in a turquoise lake and spending the day under clouds. Huaraz has a tropical mountain climate with two very distinct seasons: dry and rainy. This guide uses climate data from Peru's National Meteorology and Hydrology Service (SENAMHI) and information from PromPerú.
The two seasons
Dry season: May to September
Peak season for trekking and mountaineering. It hardly rains, skies are clear and the peaks are visible from town. PromPerú, on its official site Peru.travel, says the ideal time for the Cordillera Blanca is roughly June to September, with sunny days, better trails and safer access. Nights are the coldest of the year and it is the busiest period, so book ahead.
Rainy season: October/November to April
Rains begin with afternoon showers and intensify from January to March. The valley turns very green, but hikes get harder: muddy trails, clouds hiding the peaks and landslides (huaicos) that can cut roads. According to PromPerú, some routes may close for safety. It is still a good time for cultural tourism, villages and accessible viewpoints.
Huaraz weather month by month (SENAMHI data)
These are SENAMHI's published climate normals for Huaraz (historical averages; actual weather varies by year):
| Month | Max °C | Min °C | Rain (mm/month) |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 21.9 | 7.5 | 119 |
| February | 21.7 | 8.0 | 143 |
| March | 21.2 | 8.4 | 166 |
| April | 21.6 | 7.9 | 108 |
| May | 22.5 | 6.5 | 27 |
| June | 22.5 | 4.7 | 4 |
| July | 22.8 | 4.0 | 4 |
| August | 23.6 | 4.3 | 3 |
| September | 23.5 | 5.7 | 22 |
| October | 23.1 | 7.1 | 77 |
| November | 22.7 | 6.7 | 70 |
| December | 21.7 | 7.4 | 125 |
Two things stand out. First, the maximum temperature barely changes through the year: days are almost always mild. What changes is rain and night-time cold. Second, the rainfall difference is huge: March averages about 166 mm, while June, July and August barely reach 3–4 mm. July has the lowest average minimum (4 °C), and it is much colder higher up in the park.
Which month for your plan?
Trekking and lakes (Laguna 69, Churup, Santa Cruz)
May to September, with June, July and August the most reliable. For fewer people, May and September are good compromises. For Laguna 69, remember that since February 2026 you can only go with SERNANP-authorized agencies; book early in high season.
Green scenery and fewer tourists
April, May and October are transition months. PromPerú considers April and October mid-season: occasional rain, fewer visitors and landscapes mixing green with clearing skies. Weather is less predictable, so leave buffer days.
Culture, villages and food
Any month. Chavín de Huántar (closed Mondays) and the Callejón de Huaylas villages can be visited year-round; in the rainy season, go early as afternoons tend to be wetter.
Mountaineering
Summit expeditions in the Cordillera Blanca concentrate in the dry season, always with operators authorized by Huascarán National Park.
Daylight
Being close to the equator, day length in Huaraz barely varies: about 11 to 12 hours year-round. Long trips leave before dawn to make the most of daylight.
And the coast? Chimbote works differently
If you combine highlands and coast, beach summer in Chimbote and Casma runs December to March, exactly when it rains in the highlands. A January or February trip can combine beaches and food in Chimbote with cultural visits in the highlands.
What to wear by season
- Dry season: thermal layers, fleece, a warm jacket for nights and high mountains, hat, gloves, sunscreen and sunglasses. By day a T-shirt may do.
- Rainy season: all of the above plus waterproof jacket and trousers, poncho, mud-proof footwear and a backpack cover.
- Year-round: solar radiation is intense at altitude; use sunscreen even when cloudy.
Final tips
- Before travelling in the rainy season, check road conditions and SENAMHI alerts.
- Always leave one or two buffer days in case weather forces changes.
- Ask your agency what happens if a trip is cancelled for weather and get the policy in writing.
- Whatever the season, acclimatize: read our altitude sickness guide.
Holidays and high season
Demand also follows the Peruvian calendar. Long holidays such as Fiestas Patrias in late July and Holy Week bring many domestic travellers to Huaraz, filling buses, lodgings and tours. Book ahead on those dates. SERNANP reminds visitors at those times to travel with authorized agencies and get the entry ticket at each park checkpoint. On the coast, the feast of San Pedrito, patron of Chimbote's fishermen, is on 29 June.
In short
For hiking and seeing lakes and peaks, the best time to visit Huaraz is May to September, with June to August the driest months according to SENAMHI. April and October are good alternatives to avoid crowds, and the rainy season suits culture and combining with the coast. Plan the rest with things to do in Huaraz and how to get there from Lima.
